A Washtenaw Literacy mentor is a dedicated volunteer who has tutored for at least one year and has decided they would like to help support other tutors. There are three areas the mentors assist staff: traditional mentoring, workshops, and events.

According to the 1992 Survey of Adult Literacy, 35 percent of Flint residents and 21 percent of Genesee County residents read at or below a level 1. That means they have trouble with simple everyday reading, writing and math activities like reading signs and counting change.
