Ways to help

Youth Volunteers (12-15)

Our youth volunteers work as a team to complete service projects around the shelter and spend some time with the animals. Our youth team is always supervised by a trained adult who guides them through projects and animal interactions. Youth Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 20 hours a year.

Foster Volunteers (18+)

Temporarily welcome an animal into your home and heart! FAMD will provide all the supplies needed, you provide the space and time. Our foster volunteers help with socializing young kittens & puppies, treating sick & injured animals, and giving animals a break from their time in the shelter. The length of time an animal needs in a foster home can vary from a few days to a few months. Work with our foster coordinator to get matched with the right foster animal for you!

Fundraising & Support Volunteer (18+)

Spend your time furthering the Friend’s impact by volunteering at fundraising events, community outreach & education events, picking up donations, transporting animals, and more! Our fundraising & support volunteers do not work in the shelter or hands on with the animals, but do help raise the funds and provide support to ensure that shelter animals get the care they deserve.

In-Shelter Volunteers (16+)

Spend your time with the animals, ensuring they’re getting the care they deserve by walking dogs, cuddling cats, preparing food, and keeping the shelter organized and clean! Our in-shelter volunteers also provide excellent customer service to all shelter visitors and help animals find their new families! Volunteers begin their volunteer service with cleaning and enrichment tasks, and are then trained to work hands on with the animal. In-shelter volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 4 hours a month for a 6 month time period. Volunteers are encouraged to commit to a regular, recurring schedule.

About us Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit (FAMD) brings a little more love into the world by celebrating the special bond between an animal and their “person.” At FAMD, we don’t just rescue dogs and cats, we make life-changing connections with the people who adopt them. We bring our passion and animals into the community with events that help bring together dogs and cats with loving people. And our outreach programs help promote education and animal welfare legislation locally, so that fewer animals have to spend another minute waiting for their forever home.
