Ways to help

Home Hospice Care

Volunteer to be with a person at the end of life. You will have the unique opportunity to share moments of joy and sadness, provide comfort, and reduce isolation and fear. The clients we serve may be living in their private residence, a community care facility or in one of our agency operated hospice residences.Volunteers may become a companion to the client by visiting regularly. When the family is caring for the client volunteers may offer much-needed respite services allowing caregivers the peace of mind they need to leave the client's side.Hospice services are flexible and driven by the unique physical emotional and spiritual needs of the client. Volunteers may be asked to help with errands, assist with light housekeeping or offering occasional transportation.

Volunteers in the Journeys program work directly with grieving children. Two Tuesday evenings each month families come together at the Oakland Centre. Children and youth participate in small groups based on their age. Some volunteers are trained to facilitate these peer support groups. Professional grief support counselors organize the activities for each session and support each group while in session.Volunteers may also choose to serve as greeters, or provide child care to the infants, assist in meal service or back-office help.Help a grieving child.

About usHospice is Hope. Hope that your time before the end of your life will be as comfortable and meaningful as possible. Knowing that you will be taken care of physically, emotionally and spritually, and that your family will receive care and support. Since 1981, the staff and volunteers of Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan have cared for the sick, the dying and the grieving in our community. In that time, we have learned that life is about supporting people wherever they are in their journey. We believe that – whoever you are – you matter to the last minute of your life.
