Office Administration

Volunteers assist staff with essential office duties which may include; data entry, program projects, mailings, filing, organizing, and typing documents. This position is suitable for volunteers who are only able to give short-term service commitments.

Reception Desk

Volunteers will be responsible for answering the agency’s main phone line, greeting visitors, and assisting clients and staff. A minimum volunteer commitment of 3 months is desired.

Community Outreach

Volunteers attend and set up agency information tables at health fairs, conferences, and other related events educating the public about provided services. Volunteers must complete outreach training. HIV Test Counselor

All volunteers must successfully complete the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ HIV Counseling, Testing, and Referral training. Participation online and in classroom of the three modules are required. Volunteers who complete the training process with MDHHS will be monitored by Unified Prevention staff where test shadowing, device training, and paperwork completion practice with be conducted. Due to the longer time restraints of the CTR training process, volunteers are required to give a minimum of one year to serve as a test counselor with UHHB.

Mobile Unit Outreach (Ypsilanti)

Volunteers assist Prevention staff with mobile outreach. On a scheduled basis, the agency’s mobile unit travels to designated locations within the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti communities providing safer sex materials, syringe access, overdose prevention assistance, treatment referral assistance, HIV and Hep C testing. Volunteers must complete outreach training. This opportunity is suitable for short term volunteer commitments. Volunteer placement for these sites is limited. Please contact our Mobile Unit Coordinator for scheduling and additional details.

Clients’ Clothes Closet (Detroit)

UHHB regularly receives generous clothing donations for clients. Volunteers assist with sorting, organizing, and transitioning out seasonal items for clients who need gently used clothing. This position available for an as needed basis and appropriate short-term volunteer commitments.

Conover Food Pantry (Ypsilanti)

The Conover food pantry at our Ypsilanti location helps clients meet their nutritional needs. The pantry provides supplementary dry and canned foods, as well as personal hygiene supplies, cleaning supplies and paper goods for active clients. Volunteers will assist in pantry operations during food pantry days. Pantry takes place weekly on Wednesdays. Pantry operations includes; cleaning the pantry area, unloading the food truck, stocking, and organizing donated goods. Food pantry volunteers will also be asked to attend monthly pantry meetings. A suitable volunteer for this position is team-oriented, able to multitask, and available to give a minimum commitment of six months.

Michigan HIV/STD Hotline Operator

Volunteers who are interested in becoming operators for the Michigan HIV/STD Hotline should be comfortable discussing sex related topics. Exceptional customer service and phone etiquette are important for this position. Must understand and adhere to UHHB’s confidentiality agreement guidelines. Hotline volunteers must complete the required HIV/STD training modules. Operators will have continuous guidance and additional training with experienced hotline operators and sexual health educators throughout volunteer placement.

Bar Outreach

Bar outreach is especially designed for social settings where individuals could use information on how to reduce high risk sexual activities. Volunteers must complete outreach training to learn how to safely and appropriately interact with patrons in bars and nightclub settings. Volunteers engaging in bar outreach distribute safer sex materials, promote risk reduction, and provide information on HIV testing counseling. Volunteers must be available to attend the designated clubs and bars at night where outreach is conducted. Bar outreach takes place at locations in both Ann Arbor and Detroit.
