Affinity Mentoring is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that partners with local businesses, organizations, and schools to match students in K-8th grade with a caring adult role model to journey alongside them one hour a week. Mentoring is a mutually beneficial experience. Both you and your student's worlds will expand as you enter into relationship with each other. You will play games, encourage self-confidence, read books, and help them start to explore who it is they can become. Any person who has a heart for youth, is over 16 years old and can read, is eligible to mentor. Prospective mentors must complete an application, background check, interview and training prior to being matched. The time commitment is an hour a week for the school year [October-May]. The Asset Building Mentoring program partners adult mentors with middle school girls who participate in Alternatives For Girls' after school program. Asset-Building is a college and career prep program that helps participants become academically and financially ready to go to college or another post-secondary educational program. The role of the mentor is to serve as a positive role model and engage in recreational and educational activities with their assigned mentee. The mentor also supports the mentee with career and college exploration activities. The mentor and mentee maintains a one on one relationship meeting in the community at least twice a month. Mentors are also invited to attend educational and recreational field trips with their mentee, organized by Alternatives For Girls staff. Because child safety is a top priority, we consider violations of policies, procedures, and ground rules to be grounds for match suspension or termination. • All volunteers will be required to provide at least 3 references and will undergo background checks, including criminal history and DMV record checks as well as public domain searches. * Maintain regular communication with Match Support staff, including returning all calls and emails. The program is community-based, meaning that match activities take place out in the community. We ask that mentors commit to spending at least four hours per month with their mentee for one year. Mentoring Services provides mentoring to several different populations, including Foster Care and youth living in a Residential facility, At-Risk and High Needs Youth, and youth that have experienced instanced of trauma. Mentor's serve as positive figures that spend time with youth, and help them to achieve person centered goals. Mentor's are expected to spend at least 6-8 hours with their youth, per month, as well as calling their youth twice per month. Mentor's should have a drive to help strengthen the youth in their community, and be understanding of the multitude of backgrounds and experiences in the Greater Grand Rapids Area. Each Mentor should be open to communication, be caring and understanding of the youth that they are matched with, be supportive and reliable, and be honest and willing to work with others. We provide mentors to children facing adversity by matching them 1-to-1 with a positive adult or high school mentor. Mentors are needed for a minimum commitment of 1 year depending on placement in either a school-based or community-based setting. Mentors must be in a stable situation in their personal life, work, and mental health. Mentors must pass background checks, application, screening, interview and other assessment by program staff. Mentors must be consistent, be able to follow guidelines and accept support and supervision from professional staff once matched with a child and for the duration of the relationship. The volunteer is there to be a friend/mentor, not a parent or counselor. Activities are based on the child's needs, the volunteers interests, and recommendations from professional staff. Activities center around hobbies, interests, academic needs, and generally fun for both the child and volunteer. Our goal is to help children develop into a caring, competent, and confident young adult; while succeeding in school and life. The Peer Mentor Program establishes positive peer-to-peer and intergenerational mentoring relationships by engaging school administrators, teachers, student families, Adult Coaches, certified peer achievers; and at-risk 8th graders in a community-wide response to eliminate violence and self defeating attitudes that keep students from successful graduation. In this process, achieving 10th and 11th graders, who have graduated from Life Directions' Peer Motivation Program, are trained as Peer Mentors. After school they mentor 8th graders from nearby grammar schools to prepare them for a positive transition to high school. Peer Mentors receive support, encouragement and guidance from trained Adult Coaches recruited from neighborhood and business communities. Together they form a "pyramid of support" that advances the academic and social achievement of the Peer Mentors and their 8th Grade Mentees. The quality of relationship between ethnically diverse Adult Coaches, students, and families is enriched through leadership summits, community service projects, and seasonal gatherings. These out-of-school activities are planned by Adult Coaches in cooperation with student peer leaders. The activities emphasize cross-cultural interactions that celebrate hope, and the positive values necessary for living a good life within supportive communities. This type of cultural enrichment has proved to be profound for all involved, and builds up the following developmental assets of participating students: 1. Positive Identity with the culture of the home and family by allowing students to tell others about value and good they experience in their culture. 2. Intercultural Competence as students gain knowledge and comfort with people of different cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds. 3. Mentees are in grades K-4th and mentors are Hesperia Middle and High School students. Matches meet every Monday afternoon from 4-5 pm throughout the school year. TrueMentors Parks in Focus is an outdoor based group mentoring program. The purpose is to connect youth to nature through photography.
