Explainer

Volunteers are the front line team creating moments of education and inspiration every day. They can be trained on volunteering in just one area or can learn them all. At our Explainer Station, volunteers engage guests with STEM tabletop activities. In the Smithsonian Spark!Lab, volunteers facilitate inquiry-based discovery using creative methods to inspire and encourage interest in the invention process, helping children create a vehicle, build a skyscraper, or make an object fly. In BASF Kids’ Lab, volunteers assist in leading hour-long chemistry workshops. In Kids Town, volunteers foster positive attitudes toward science and build the foundation for more sophisticated learning in our specialized learning area for children ages 5 and under. (4 month minimum commitment of 4 hours a month)
